Globally, uncorrected refractive errors are the main cause of visual impairment. According to the estimates of World Health Organization, about 285 million people are visually impaired out of which 39 million are blind and 246 million have low vision. The major causes of visual impairment are uncorrected refractive errors (43%) followed by cataract (33%). However, the major cause of blindness is cataract (51%). Prevention of Blindness (POB) Trust is a registered charity working for the prevention and treatment of the avoidable causes of blindness focusing on the deprived and marginalized communities. Since its inception in 2007, the trust is providing free of cost diagnostic and surgical eye care services in remote and deprived areas of Pakistan and abroad. The Trust is also striving towards human resource mobilization, training workshops and advocacy with all stakeholders. POB Trust has established an eye hospital in Lahore and a teaching eye hospital in Karachi. School Eye Care is among the major activities of the trust resulting in screening of thousands of children in school environment along with the provision of required spectacles, training of teachers and relevant education. The presence of refractive errors can have many problems with children including educational loss, economic issues, low productivity and impaired quality of life. POB Trust has been working to address this issue and screened more than thirty thousand school children and provided required vision glasses and medicine.
